I Heard It Like This: The Wisdom of Masahisa Goi (English Edition)

When you make a show of your own righteousness, it gives others a most disagreeable feeling. Imagine how you would feel if someone projected that kind of attitude, as if to say: ‘I am a good person,’ ‘my faith is unshakable,’ ‘I am filled with profound love,’ and so on. It’s not a pleasant spectacle at all. I do not recommend either arrogance or false humility. I suggest that you just lay your heart bare and live life straightforwardly, thinking ‘Thank you God!’ and ‘It is not my ego that deserves the credit, but God!’ If you can always start from this perspective, never losing the spirit of thanks, you will never stagnate or slide backwards.
