166.

To be humble does not mean to belittle yourself. Do not dent your spirit by saying such things as ‘I am no good,’ or ‘I am a hopeless case.’ A flat nose may be corrected by plastic surgery, but an excessively dented spirit is not easily corrected. The reason is that in depreciating yourself, you think you are doing a good thing, and others might even agree with you. I sometimes wonder why people cannot become more frank and straightforward. It is best just to be natural, isn’t it? We are meant to live naturally, making the most of our abilities. You will get tired if you try to exceed your abilities. It all comes back to humility—to steadily do your very best, thinking, ‘It is not really enough; I would like to do more.’ The same holds true between husband and wife. The more devoted you are to each other, the more you appreciate each other, and the more you want to do for each other.
